Jumex in Polanco features artists like Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Cy Twombly, and David LaChapelle. Located in a striking, minimalist building by British architect David Chipperfield, it focuses on vanguard (albeit occasionally social-media bate-y) exhibits.

Founded in 1588 as a Jesuit college, San Ildefonso later became part of the National University of Mexico and a key cultural institution. It is closely linked to figures like Diego Rivera and houses important murals by Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros. The colonial building now hosts temporary exhibitions by artists such as Louise Bourgeois, alongside its historic collections. It also occasionally presents orchestral concerts in its beautiful auditorium, making it worth following their Instagram for updates.

Like any natural history museum worth its salt, this relatively small but impressive collection offers a fascinating glimpse into Earth's history with minerals, meteors, and dinosaur skeletons, all housed in a beautifully preserved, historic building that truly feels like stepping back in time. One of my personal favorites as a dinosaur aficionado, the architecture, curation, and contents make this a highly underrated and lesser-known experience.

Tokyo Music Bar is one of Mexico City's premier "listening bars," a concept originating in Japan (known as jazz kissa). It is a sophisticated speakeasy-style cocktail bar that pairs high-end, Japanese-inspired mixology with music played exclusively on a high-fidelity (Hi-Fi) analog sound system using vinyl records.

Housed in a beautiful neoclassical building. Come for the art, stay for one of the city’s best art bookshops and the charming restaurant and café. I particularly like the focus on Black, African, and African diaspora artists.

About a 7 - 8 minute walk or roll from Café NIN, you can find Plaza Rio de Janeiro, a lively square full of people walking dogs, cafés, and greenery, crowned by a towering replica of Michelangelo’s David standing in the central fountain. Take a seat on a bench and enjoy some people watching or take advantage of one of the most photogenic spots in town.

This modern art museum has hosted outstanding exhibitions in recent years by artists such as Yayoi Kusama and Ragnar Kjartansson. While not every show is a standout, the striking building in the heart of Chapultepec Park, near Reforma, makes it well worth a visit. Museo Tamayo hosts a monthly jazz night on the last Wednesday of each month, including a drink and a guided tour. The surrounding lawns are perfect for a picnic, and the museum shop is excellent.

The Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL), is one of my favorite buildings, with its elegant architecture and stunning grand central staircase. Showcasing Mexican art from the 16th century to the early 20th century including works by several iconic muralists, MUNAL is housed in the former Palace for Communications and Public Works, a stunning neoclassical building designed by Italian architect Silvio Contri. Across the street from Bellas Artes and Palacio de Correos (the Postal Palace), I cannot recommend seeing the stunning interior highly enough.

Proyect Público Prim is a creative hub housed in a restored 19th-century mansion offering exhibitions, cultural events, and innovative projects. "Safe Space" one such project, offers daily guided meditations at 9:00 am. Sessions are free and a wonderful way to enjoy the site if no exhibitions or events are happening during your visit. Taverna, the bar and restaurant at Proyecto Público Prim, is set within a beautifully restored space dating back to 1905, with Mediterranean-inspired dishes roasted in a wood-fired oven. Known for its candlelit atmosphere, it's perfect for date nights or celebrations, featuring standout dishes like chorizo-stuffed dates and whole fish fillet (The Infatuation, Wanderlog).

Xochimilco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Mexico City, is known for its ancient canal system from the Aztec agricultural era. Rich in biodiversity, it is home to unique species like the endangered axolotl. Visitors explore the canals aboard colorful trajineras departing from Nuevo Nativitas or Cuemanco. Along the way, floating vendors offer local food, drinks, and even mariachi music for a festive experience.

*Low budget food option. This specific branch of La Chula, a small but popular taco chain, is one of my top five taco places in the entire city. As someone who’s spent a significant portion of her life traipsing up and down Mexico City, eating and trying everything she can find, that’s saying something. What I love most is the sheer deliciousness of the tacos al pastor (usually as tasty but less greasy than in other places), the simplicity of the tacos de costilla, and the size and variety of the menu. This is my preferred place for bringing friends with dietary requirements including gluten-free, pork- free, and vegetarian.

Dedicated to the traditional Mexican beverage, pulque.

This small perfume boutique is one of the most beautiful scent spaces in Mexico, blending architecture, design, and sensory experience. Hidden behind a stone walkway and lush greenery, Xinú feels more like a museum than a shop, with interiors inspired by Japanese architecture and Finnish saunas. Its refined atmosphere makes it hard to resist its elegant, reusable signature perfume bottles. Even without an interest in fragrance, Xinú is a standout destination on Calle Marsella and well worth a visit.

Dedicated to Mexican folk art, Arte Popular showcases an enormous variety of crafted objects including textiles, pottery, masks, alebrijes, and the famous Vochol, a vintage Volkswagen Beetle covered in intricate and explosively colorful Wixarica beadwork. Housed in a beautifully restored Art Deco building, the museum captures the creativity and artistic breadth of Mexico’s diverse regions.

This historic clock on Bucareli street was gifted by the Chinese government in 1910, symbolizing friendship between Mexico and China. It stands in a roundabout surrounded by beautiful buildings and two charming corner restaurants, Supplí (Roman pasta) and Makan (Singaporean fine dining).

Shhh is a high-fidelity listening bar dedicated to the "radical act of listening," combining audiophile-grade sound equipment with a full bar experience. It is often described as the perfect complement to the adjacent vinyl shop, 99 Records.

Sabotage Records is an independent record store and cultural hub focused on vinyl, DJ culture, and underground music in Mexico City.

Nestled in Coyoacán is Frida Kahlo’s birthplace and lifelong home, now a museum that displays her art and personal belongings. The space offers intimate insight into her difficult yet vibrant life, where she lived, created, and recovered from ongoing health struggles. It is the second most visited museum in Mexico, after the National Museum of Anthropology. Visitors are drawn to Frida’s enduring legacy in the very place that shaped her work and identity.

The Palacio de Bellas Artes, an architectural gem completed in 1934, is a stunning blend of Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, originally meant to celebrate Mexico's rich artistic heritage. Today, it serves as a premier cultural venue, hosting world-class theater and ballet performances, art exhibitions, and the renowned Ballet Folklórico by Amalia Hernandez, a show I highly recommend.

San Carlos is one of the most period drama reminiscent/ Bridgerton-esque buildings in the city. I would visit just for the stunning circular courtyard, with the solid and wonderfully curated permanent collection and temporary exhibitions being a great added bonus. San Carlos has some truly unique pieces including medieval and gothic European art and paintings by masters by Rubens, Goya, Lucas Cranach the Elder, and Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, the trailblazing artist known for her portraits of figures like Marie Antoinette.

An Italian-inspired restaurant and bar located in the trendy Roma Norte neighborhood of Mexico City (CDMX). It offers a refined menu focused on Sicilian flavors, coupled with a distinctively cool and music-driven atmosphere.

The National Museum of Anthropology houses an extensive collection of archaeological artifacts, including the famous Sun Stone, or Piedra del Sol, erroneously known as the Aztec Calendar, and treasures from civilizations including the Mayans and Olmecs. The museum as it exists now opened on September 17, 1964 and was designed by architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez to serve as a key institution for the preservation and transmission of Mexico's indigenous cultures and history. The design of the central courtyard is truly a marvel.

This charming, informative, and interactive museum looks at economics, finance, money printing, global markets, and sustainable development. Housed in a majestic colonial building, MIDE features hands-on exhibits that make complex concepts easy to grasp and is engaging for all ages. You can absolutely enjoy it as a geeky adult, thousgh the interactive bits are, as far as I can remember, all in Spanish.

Originally built as a royal palace in the late 18th century, this castle served as the residence of Emperor Maximilian I (a Habsburg, installed by occupying French forces under Napoleon III) and Empress Carlota during the Second Mexican Empire in the 1860s. Today, it houses the National Museum of History, showcasing artifacts, paintings, and murals that illustrate a broad swathe of Mexican history and its political struggles.

Chapultepec Park covers over 2,000 acres and features the Castle, several museums, a botanical garden, two beautiful lakes, and Chapultepec Zoo. It’s roughly twice the size of New York's Central Park, and, per the World Monuments Fund (WMF), is the “oldest and largest urban park in Latin America, and one of the oldest urban parks in the world.”

It's the ideal spot for students and music fans near UNAM. It is highly valued for its extensive stock of imported records, specialized rock genres, and its commitment to offering vinyl, CDs, cassettes, and music accessories in a vibrant, underground-focused setting.

A bit of a favorite of mine, Franz Mayer houses one of Latin America’s finest collections of decorative arts, including intricate ceramics, furniture, textiles, and silverwork from around the world in a gorgeously restored colonial building. Franz Mayer also hosts the World Press Photo annual exhibition and sometimes features top notch temporary exhibits, like one by Dutch artist Theo Jansen, known for his Strandbeest sculptures, which are wind-powered, skeletal structures that move around like mythical creatures.

Paseo de la Reforma, inspired by Parisian boulevards, stretches about 12 kilometers and connects landmarks like Chapultepec, El Ángel, and the Zócalo. It is the city’s main artery and the stage for major protests, parades, and daily urban life. El Ángel de la Independencia, built in 1910, stands as a symbol of Mexico’s national pride. It’s especially charming at night, perfect for a stroll after tacos at Orinoco.

The Museo de Arte Moderno includes pieces by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Rufino Tamayo and is conveniently located in Chapultepec Park, a short walk from both Museo Tamayo and the Anthropology Museum. I personally like but don’t love this one. If you do want to go, my must-sees would be the foyer with its cool architecture and amber-colored dome and the serene sculpture garden.

Located about 50 kilometers northeast of Mexico City, Teotihuacán is one of the most important ancient cities in Mesoamerica, founded around 100 BCE. It is home to the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, overlooking the Avenue of the Dead and the vast ceremonial complex. Once the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas, it was a major center of culture, trade, and religion. Visitors can dine nearby at places like La Gruta or El Jaguar, or experience the site from above on an early-morning hot air balloon ride.
