Gion is a historic district in Kyoto’s Higashiyama ward, originally established as a place of lodging and entertainment for visitors to the nearby Yasaka Shrine. Over time, it became one of Japan’s most renowned geiko quarters, characterised by wooden merchant-houses, tea-houses, narrow alleys and lantern-lit evenings.
