Fundació Antoni Tàpies

By @hanneolsen

Inside a beautiful modernist building by Lluís Domènech i Montaner you find a museum devoted to Antoni Tàpies and to modern and contemporary art. The house once held the Montaner i Simón publishing company and reopened as the foundation in 1990 after Tàpies created it in 1984. Before you even step inside, remember to look up. The instantly recognizable sculpture, Cloud and Chair, sits playfully yet powerfully on the roof, marking the skyline and welcoming visitors. Inside there are changing exhibitions, a strong core of Tàpies works and a library that supports research.

Address: Carrer d'Aragó, 255, L'Eixample, 08007 Barcelona, Spain

  • Why go

Architecture and art together. A clear place to understand Tàpies across periods, with room for other artists and public activities.

  • Known for

The rooftop Cloud and Chair and one of the best collections and archives of Tàpies’ work.

  • Vibe

Calm galleries inside with space to slow down and think.

  • Tips

Look up at Cloud and Chair before you enter, then take time with the materials Tàpies loved to use. Check the calendar for temporary shows, talks and film sessions. The library is open for consultation, so plan a quiet stop there if you like to read around the art.
