Spain - Barcelona
Picasso Museum Barcelona
By @hanneolsen
Explore more than 4,200 works by Pablo Picasso in a cluster of beautiful mansions in La Ribera. Barcelona shaped him, and you see it here: student drawings from the Escola Llotja, the El Quatre Gats years, Paris, and the Blue and Rose periods. The museum opened in 1963 on the initiative of his friend Jaime Sabarté and has grown ever since.
Address: Carrer de Montcada, 15-23, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona, Spain
Why go
The largest museum dedicated to Picasso with a clear focus on his Barcelona years and the unmissable Las Meninas series of 58 paintings.
Known for
Early works and the complete Las Meninas reinterpretation donated by Picasso.
Vibe
Intimate and historic, with quiet courtyards and galleries that let the work breathe.
Tips
Most works date from 1890 to 1917. Start with the early drawings and finish with Las Meninas. Do not miss the rooms with lithographs, etchings and ceramics.
