A beautiful waterfall inside Þingvellir National Park. Set within the dramatic Almannagjá gorge on the edge of the North American plate. The river Öxará feeds the falls and the scene is picture perfect year round. ❄️💧

  • Why go:
    It blends natural beauty with history. The Öxará was diverted in early settlement times to serve the Alþingi gatherings.

  • Vibe:
    Scenic. Historic.

  • Tips:
    I recommend the easy, well marked walk from the car park. In winter the falls often freeze into striking ice formations.

A small lake in the heart of Reykjavík known simply as The Pond. Loved by locals for walks and birdwatching. In winter parts freeze for ice skating while one corner stays warm from geothermal water. 🦢

Sun Voyager
A striking seaside sculpture in Reykjavík with Mount Esja and Faxaflói as the backdrop. Often mistaken for a Viking ship, it is a dreamboat that celebrates the sun and exploration. Unveiled in 1990 for Reykjavík’s 200th anniversary. 📸🌅
Hallgrimskirkja
Reykjavík’s iconic church and the city’s best viewpoint. Designed to echo Iceland’s basalt columns and mountain forms. Completed in 1986 and visible from almost everywhere in town. ⛪️

Gullfoss Falls
One of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls and a Golden Circle highlight. A powerful two tier cascade that drops into a narrow canyon. On sunny days the spray often throws shimmering rainbows. 🌈
Konungshver
A large hot spring pool in the Geysir Geothermal Area. The name means King’s Spring, after King Christian IX who visited in 1874. Clear water at near boiling shows the heat beneath even when the surface is calm. 🌋

A deep pool on the Öxará River just downstream from Öxarárfoss. Calm on the surface with a heavy past. Part of the wider Þingvellir story.

Þingeyraroddi Camping Ground
One of the best campgrounds in this area. The location by the sea and the well equipped rooms makes it worth it. The area is sheltered so almost no wind here.

A waterfall called the “Waterfall of the Gods.” It’s wide, dramatic, and just beautiful. Water cascading down in a perfect curve.

Seljalandsfoss
Definitely worth a visit. There's a million points of view of this waterfall and all of them look great. You can also walk behind the fall, full curtain of water, spray and light, incredible. There is a place to buy gifts and food, and parking is paid. Easy stop and so beautiful. 💧
Fardagafoss Waterfall
An easy hike leads to this waterfall, with a smaller waterfall and a canyon along the way. Great views.

Kvernufoss
A waterfall that is often skipped in the biggest tours, so it’s quieter and less crowded. The trails getting there are beautiful.
Rauðufossar
A hidden gem. You need to go for a 15 minutes hike from the parking spot to get to this orange waterfall. The views are amazing.
Skógafoss
This was one of the most exciting places I ever been, the raw landscape and those huge natural monuments impress everyone one even the more skeptical 🧐. Easily accessible from the parking lot. On a sunny day, you will likely see rainbow in front of the fall as well.
Brúarfoss
This blue waterfall is a short walk from the parking lot. Colors are so pretty here, clear blue against the black rock. So worth it.

Svartifoss
A narrow waterfall about 20 meters tall, with dark basaltic columns framing it. The hike to get there is easy and quite short.
Cachoeiras do Horto
Cachoeiras do Horto is a beautiful natural area within the city, offering a series of waterfalls accessible by hiking trails from the Horto neighborhood. Some of the waterfalls include Quebra, Chuveiro, and Jequitibá. The trails can be a bit challenging, especially after rain, so it is best to wear sturdy footwear or take an Uber to the starting point. The scenery along the way is stunning and makes the hike well worth it.
Goðafoss Waterfall
This beautiful waterfall flows over a curved 12 meter precipice. The paths and viewpoints are very accessible, and there’s even a little hotel nearby.
